Photos - Mongolia

He second stage of our train journey from St. Petersburg to Shanghai took us trough Mongolia. We started in the capital Ulan Bator from where we drove deep into the steppe lands to stay some days in a traditional Ger. Then it was time to take the train to China straight trough the Gobi desert.

Choosing the Trans Mongolian route to Ulan Bator over the Trans Siberian route to Vladivostok was a difficult decision. The Vladivostok option is the real deal and that is what Comtourist is all about, but the Mongolia route was to tempting so we decided to the real Trans Sib an other time. We caught the first glimpse of the Mongolian steppes when we woke up in the early morning and opened the curtain of our train compartment. Herds of Horses and Yaks grazed the plains and nomads came out of their Gerīs (Mongolian Yurt). We first stayed two days in Ulan Bator that looked very much like a Soviet city. A bus took us far into the steppe land and dropped us of at the Elstei Ger Camp, were we would sleep in a Ger for two nights. From the camp we made a trekking and visited a nomad family in their Ger, there were also activities like wrestling and horde riding. The nights in Mongolia are freezing cold, but we had a great time on the steppes. From Ulan Bator we would made the next stage of our train journey to China through the Gobi Desert.
