Photos - Rodina Mat Kiev
The 62m high Rodina Mat Motherland Statue, locally as Brezhnev’s Daughter, towers over the city of Kiev and is visible from many parts of town. It is probably one of the largest Soviet statues, together with the Motherland statue in Volgograd. We visited Rodina Mat together with Museum of the Great Patriotic War when we were in Kiev in 2006.
The Museum of the Great Patriotic War itself is a typical Soviet museum displaying the suffering of the Soviet people and heroics of the Red Army during World War II. Outside is a giants sculpture complex depicting various battles during the war. There is also an outdoor exposition where Soviet tanks, aircraft canons, rockets and other military hardware is displayed. A museum and monument dedicated to the war in Afghanistan was added to the complex later. Inside the statue is a large room with the names of the hero’s of the Soviet Union on in scripted in the walls and frescos on the ceiling. Rodina Mat is right next door from the Cave Monastery Pecherska Lavra, Kiev’s most famous tourist attraction, the two make an ideal combination for a day programme.
