The third country of our 2006 Baltic camping tour was Lithuania, the most western of the three Baltic countries. We first camped in Trakai form where we made day trips to the capital Vilnius and Grutas Statue Park. Finally we camped on the Curonian Split a sand dune split between Lithuania and Russia.
The first site in Lithuania we visited was the Hill of Crosses near Siauliai not far from the Latvian border. Hundred of thousand small en big crosses brought by pilgrims are piled up here. The Soviet authorities bulldozed the site at least three times but the Lithuanians kept coming back with crosses. We camped for a couple of days near Trakai, a historic city and lake resort close to the Lithuanian capital, Vilnius. We took the train from Trakai to Vilnius which has a lot of Soviet area architecture including the famous green bridge with Soviet sculptures. Highlight was the tour trough the Vilnius KGB headquarters, now a Museum. Highly anticipated was our visit of Grutas Park an Communist themed attraction park were many of the dismantled Lithuanian Soviet statues are displayed. The park is highly popular with Locals and also features a restaurant with food from the communist era. After our stay in Trakai we drove to Klaipeda were to took a ferry to the Curonian Split, a 98 km long thin sand-dune spit. We stayed at a camping near Nida the main city of the Split close to the Russian border. Main attractions of the split is the magnificent dune landscape that is constantly changing. Close to Nida is the house were Thomas Mann, now turned into a museum.
