Photos - Kaliningrad
The final destination of our 2007 Baltic holiday was the Russian enclave Kaliningrad; know as Koningsberg before World War II. Koningsberg was once the proud capital of East Prussia and supposedly one of Europe’s most beautiful cities; during the war it was totally destroyed. Comtourist stayed three days in this strange city and we shot many interesting photos.
The German inhabitants of Koningsberg were forced to leave the city and it was repopulated by Russians. Nowadays it is still of great importance for Russia at is their only ice free port in the Baltic and is home of the Baltic fleet. We hired a guide and driver for a day who showed us the city and took us to the closed city Baltiysk. Highlights of Kaliningrad are the many Soviet monuments, B-413 Tango class museum submarine, Bunker of German General Otto Lasch and the omni present Soviet architecture like the House of Soviets. Tourist will need a Russian Visa and have to accept that they are not in Europe, we were stopped many times by road police and had to bribe our way out of the country to avoid a day waiting at the Polish border. This Russian enclave within the borders of the EU is well worth a visit however, flying in may be a better solution then go by car however.
