Photos of the Soviet cemetery and Texel War Museum
The so called Russian War on Texel was still raging on in May 1945 after the Germans already surrendered in Berlin. A battalion of Georgian soldiers that joined the German army started a mutiny against their former masters when the end of the war was near. Comtourist went to Texel and shot some photos of the Soviet cemetery and in the museum dedicated to the war on Texel.
The battle on Texel is often referred to as the last battle of World War II in Europe. German commander Breitner refused to stop fighting as he argued that he was ending a mutiny. The Russian War on Texel claimed 120 local residents, 812 German and 562 Georgian lives. The best reminder of this battle nowadays is the Soviet cemetery where the Georgians that died are buried. There is also a section of the Texel Aviation and War Museum dedicated to the Georgian uprising. The museum is based on Texel Airport and includes an interesting section about the Atlantic Wall defensives structures on Texel. Lucky visitors can also see the local Antonov An-2 landing or taking of on the airport.
