Photos Lenin’s mausoleum

The Lenin Mausoleum on Red Square is probably one of Moscow’s best known tourist attractions together with the Kremlin and St. Basils Cathedral. Here a photo collection with images we shot ourselves, Soviet era postcards, historic photos, and actual pictures of Lenin’s body in his tomb. We also included some pictures of other famous communist mausoleums and the Kremlin Wall Necropolis.

Religion was forbidden by most communist regimes and replaced by a leader cult worshipping the living and deceased revolutionary party bosses. After Lenin died in 1924 it was decided to embalm his body and display it to the Russian public. People kept coming to see him and soon it was decided by Stalin to preserve Lenin’s body for a longer time. A wooden mausoleum was build on Red Square were people could look at the leader of the Russian revolution. The mausoleum was upgraded to a stone building 1930 and still looks the same today. It is not allowed to make photographs inside the mausoleum but a couple of pictures from the interior with Lenin’s tomb do exist on the internet. The Lenin Mausoleum stood in the background of some significant historic events like the many May Day and victory day parades, Stalin’s burial and later reburial and Mathias Rust’s landing on red Square in 1987. We also have some pictures of the Kremlin Wall Necropolis where Stalin, Brezhnev, Gagarin, Zhukov, Korolyov and many other famous Soviets were buried. We also have some photos of Mao Zedong, Kim Il Sung and Ho Chi Min’s mausoleums that Comtourist has visited in the past.
